Warehouses are the junctions or terminals of products and information flow. It is more or less a network of supply chain which runs between sources of supply and final consumers. Warehouses may vary in terms of their roles and characteristics from place to place.
The concept and structure of Global warehousing has evolved in last ten years as the supply chains have become faster and to ensure the punctual response in case of an emergency, the strategy of being ready with the stock becomes important. This has become the most important part of a supply chain as it has to be run by the most experienced and capable staff of the company who have been trained to deal with any type of situation and have all the required information to deal with even third party logistics. As there is a lot of information to be processed during the management of a global warehouse, this requires computerized proceedings and many sophisticated software for maintaining, referencing and processing the data. Many organizations use these global warehouses for other organizations as a third party unit on some rental and operational costs. There are a few such supply chains in India as well.
As opposed to Global warehousing spaces, Field warehouses are not the permanent ones. These warehouses are used more for storage than any operational purposes. Generally fit into the buildings which have not been purposefully designed to carry out the requirement of a warehouse. The staffing required for a field warehouse does not necessarily has to be the best trained professionals in operations and the data and information is done largely on paper. In cases of emergencies these warehouses are not dependable as they do not prove to be very resourceful. There are various kind of warehouses that are specifically designed to handle certain kind of resources. Here are a few mentioned below.
